CHAPTER 13

FAYE SINGER

T he next day, I was sick. Emotionally, I was broken. I hadn’t realized how attached I had become to Jah in the last few weeks until he had ended it.

“Girl, pick your face up,” Sam fussed with a frown. “I told you all that nigga wanted was some pussy.”

I could only roll my eyes. I feared that if I said anything, I would cry and further embarrass myself for falling for Jah like a naïve dumbass.

Sam shrugged. “At least you can say that you got to fuck him.”

“She didn’t just fuck him,” Chloe cut in as she stood at her vanity. “He took her on a romantic dinner cruise and kissed her under the fireworks, took her to fancy-ass hotels, and for walks downtown.”

Sam waved Chloe off. “That’s a rich nigga’s way of ensuring he get some pussy.”

Chloe scoffed. “You are such a fucking hater, bro.”

“I’m keeping it real,” Sam insisted.

Pouting, I zoned out the conversation. I had been in my head about Jah ever since he’d hung up on me the night before. Now, I was back in this fucked-up reality with Doon without my sunshine. It was devastating.

My phone started to ring, and I cringed. I hated the expectancy and hope of it being Jah every time it rang and then being let down.

“Ahhhhhhh !” I screamed, making Chloe and Sam jump. I hopped up on my knees in her bed, staring at my phone. “Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!”

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Sam asked.

“It’s Jah!”

Chloe squealed. “Answer it!”

Sam rolled her eyes at my excitement, shaking her head shamefully.

I took a deep breath and coolly answered the phone. “Hello?”

“What’s up?” I was so relieved when his tone was once again gentle with me.

“Hey.”

“I need to holla at you. Where you at?”

“My girl’s house.”

“Send me the address.”

“Okay.” I hung up, jumping out of the bed.

“What he say?” Chloe asked.

My fingers were trembling as I texted Jah Chloe’s address. “He wants to talk to me. He’s about to stop over here.”

Chloe and I shared excited grins as I joined her in the mirror. I was already dressed. I had managed to get out of the house that night because Doon had plans with his friends. Chloe, Sam, and I were going out for a few hours, but I didn’t have long because Doon was still being overly possessive. He had yet to let go of the assumption that I had feelings for someone else.

Jah must have already been in the hood, because he sent me a text ten minutes later, saying that he was outside.

“I’ll be right back,” I told them.

“You so frantic,” Sam teased.

I waved my middle finger while hurrying out of the room.

“Don’t be all day. We gotta leave in thirty minutes!” Sam yelled behind me.

I hurried through Chloe’s small house. She was living in a low-income townhouse community. She had decorated the modest two-bedroom unit so cute. Every time I walked into it, I filled with envy. I couldn’t wait for the day that I could walk into my own shit.
